‘Yellowstone’ Star Kelly Reilly Says This One Beth Dutton Scene Really Upset Fans

This is your daily reminder that Yellowstone’s Beth Dutton, played by the Kelly Reilly, will absolutely Beth Dutton out of anyone who gives her so much as a sideways look — including, apparently … a little boy.

Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) of “Yellowstone” is a complicated character. Foul-mouthed and hot-headed, there’s nothing she wouldn’t do for her family and the people she loves. As Reilly put it in an interview with Esquire, “She finds it impossible to toe the line in that way, which is what makes her so ferocious, because she is willing to do something that I don’t think any other characters are willing to do, which is destroy herself.”

Beth is quick to show anger, damage property, and tell people off. However, there’s also a side to her that longs for something she’s unable to have: a child. A botched abortion led to a hysterectomy when she was young, and she is unable to have children. So when she and Rip (Cole Hauser) essentially adopt Carter (Finn Little), her maternal side that she’d been pushing off and repressing for most of her life comes to the surface. But one scene between Reilly and Little was almost too much for the actress to deal with emotionally.

In season One, Beth took in Carter, but in the season finale, wouldn’t let him call her mom. “Yellowstone” star Kelly Reilly revealed that fans were very upset by that scene. “America went after me for that!” she laughed. “I was like, ‘That’s the character, not me!’ But I get it. I wish she would [let herself be a mother to him], too.”
Before you get riled up, Reilly continued her thought with a solid backing of her fictional counterpart.

“If she’s telling this kid that she’s just met, ‘Yeah, I’ll be your mom,’ that’s not truthful to him,” she said. “She goes, ‘You had a mom. She died. I can’t replace that. But I’ll be your friend.’ I think there’s something honorable about that.”

Well, Beth Dutton is going to Beth Dutton, always and forever. It’s a hoot that fans singled out this one moment, though, considering all of the other stunts the character has pulled off. Since we have quite a bit of time to go until Yellowstone season 5 drops, may we present: a half-hour-long supercut of Beth Dutton’s finest moments.
