Let’s learn some more about Sam Elliott, the guy with the famous mustache and the velvety baritone voice.

Elliott is a movie star. He plays the best kind of cowboys. It’s not a real western unless you see Sam Elliott on screen or hear that voice narrate the story.

But what are his favorite movies? What horror movie scared him the most?

Elliott answered the question in a 2019 interview with Ain’t It Cool.

“Holy s–t! Man, that’s a tough one,” Sam Elliott said in his initial response. “What’s the one that Billy Friedkin made? I’m drawing a total blank on it now. It’s THE EXORCIST I’m thinking of. Not sure if Friedkin directed it but THE EXORCIST for me.”

And yes, William Friedkin directed The Exorcist. Remember Linda Blair’s spinning head? The movie that Sam Elliott named as his favorite horror flick came out in December 1973. Yes, demonic possession of a 12-year-old girl, especially when she spews pea soup, was horrifying.

The movie was the first from the horror genre to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture. It received 10 nominations in all, winning for best sound and best-adapted screenplay.

Some moviegoers had physical reactions to the film. But fans flocked to the movie, anyway, when it opened nationally in 1974. The movie generated $66.3 million in its first year. That was second only to The Sting, which starred Paul Newman and Robert Redford. So yes, Sam Elliott, many people shared your opinion for this truly horrifying movie.

Elliott plays Shea Brennan, an older cowboy from Texas who leads a group of settlers to Montana. We don’t know a ton of details about the show, but there are some hints. Nic Sheridan, the wife of Taylor Sheridan, the show’s creator, dropped a big one involving Sam Elliott. His character will have the famous mustache and Elliott has grown out his gray locks.

Check out this Instagram post. Sheridan captioned it: “Sunday’s with Sam #total#badass#cheers.”

Audrey McGraw, the daughter of Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, replied: “Ahhhhh!!!!! This makes me so excited.” (Us, too).

Sam Elliott is a handsome 78. And his career definitely still is on the upswing. He received his first-ever Academy Award nomination in 2019 for his role in the remake of A Star is Born. And he’s had no problems finding other top projects, including 1883.

Four years ago, he talked about acting through his 70s with the Washington Post.

“I don’t know. I’d rather look at my career as a continuum. It’s got peaks and valleys, and I’m just on one of the peaks right now. It may be the highest peak I’ve been on since I’ve been in the business.”
