Love Is Blind Season 6: Johnny & Amy’S Shocking Birth Control Conversations Explained

Love Is Blind season 6 has been a wild ride, and while one of the less dramatic plot lines, Johnny and Amy’s birth control conversations need to be unpacked. Johnny and Amy are the Love Is Blind season 6 couple most likely to get married, but they aren’t devoid of problems. The Love Is Blind season 6 cast members have differing ideas regarding retirement and seem to have missed high school health class. Given that Johnny and Amy seem like responsible and intelligent people, let this be a testament to the need for better sex education in the United States, especially in the “Bible Belt” of the South.

There have been many shocking revelations from Love Is Blind season 6. Between Trevor having a girlfriend through filming, Jeramey being engaged mere weeks before casting, accusations that Jimmy had a girlfriend, and speculation on Kenneth’s sexuality, the drama has been almost too much to handle. The only couple likely to tie the knot after episodes 10-11 are Johnny and Amy, with the chances of AD and Clay saying yes at the altar hovering at 50/50. However, there seems to be plenty of confusion online regarding Johnny and Amy’s pregnancy prevention conversations, and it’s time to address what’s going on.

Johnny Was Willing To Talk Through Male Birth Control Options

To his credit, Johnny was willing to talk through male birth contraceptive options. While it seemed like a big jump for Amy to suggest a vasectomy, he was willing to look into it. Vasectomies are an excellent option for those who are sure in their choice not to have any more children, but the procedure is not always easily reversible, as Johnny brought up. Therefore, vasectomies are not a great option for those who want to prevent pregnancy now but may want children later.

Additionally, there are male birth control methods in development, but the male equivalent of hormonal birth control isn’t currently available for public consumption. It’s interesting to note that male hormonal contraceptive options in development are effective. Still, the side effects, which are nearly identical to widely distributed female birth control options, are considered a hindrance.

Many fans had a visceral reaction to Amy jumping straight over the use of condoms to a vasectomy. However, Amy noted in an Instagram story that they considered condoms but were worried about their effectiveness. When condoms are used correctly, they are 98% effective against pregnancy. However, typical use indicates condoms are around 87% effective, according to Planned Parenthood. Understandably, using a birth control method with a 13% failure rate with typical use would make Johnny nervous, as he and Amy want to be on track to buy a house and retire early.

Amy Advocated For Her Bodily Autonomy

Amy was firm in her choice not to be on birth control and further explained her choice on her Instagram. According to Reality Ashley, Amy noted she has “a rare genetic *hereditary* disorder that affects the blood vessels in [her] body,” which affects her desire to have children. Additionally, she is following the advice of her doctor in not taking birth control, which notably can affect blood pressure. Regardless of any health issues, Amy noted she likes being regular in her cycle and doesn’t want to pump her body full of hormones.

Hormonal contraceptive methods have enabled women to prioritize their education and careers, plan families, and build their lives the way they want to. Proper use of contraceptives also prevents the need for abortions, which, contrary to Sarah Ann’s misinformed opinion, are not used as a “form of birth control.” However, hormonal birth control also has many unpleasant side effects, ranging from mild to severe. While the advent of contraceptives has been incredible for women, another beautiful part of the feminist movement is choice. Amy is choosing not to be on hormonal birth control for her health and because she doesn’t want to use it.

Amy and Johnny Are The Best Couple In Love Is Blind Season 6

Love Is Blind season 6 has been a mess, and despite the birth control conversations, Johnny and Amy are by far the best couple. Johnny wasn’t pushy with Amy to get on birth control; instead, he was just worried about an accidental pregnancy due to his upbringing. He was protecting both of them and looking for a solution. If Amy and Johnny do get married on Love Is Blind, it’s likely they will figure out a pregnancy prevention method that works for them. For example, if Amy’s menstruation cycle is super regular, as she says it is, condoms combined with a family planning tracker could be a good option. There are also non-hormonal copper IUDs. Regardless of what they choose, there are options for Johnny and Amy.

While the advent of hormonal contraceptives has undoubtedly been a positive development, there is often an assumption that all women are on birth control. However, for health or personal reasons, plenty of women choose not to be on hormonal contraceptives. The responsibility for preventing pregnancy falls on both consenting parties engaging in sex. Hopefully, Johnny and Amy are still together after Love Is Blind and have figured out a contraceptive method that works for them.
