Kevin Costner is reflecting on the first time he starred in a Western film.
Costner, 69, shared three images and a short video clip of himself in the 1985 movie Silverado on Instagram Wednesday. The film marks Costner’s 10th onscreen credit, per his IMDb page, and came just four years after he began acting in Hollywood movies.
“Silverado, 1985. A career-making movie for me I’ll never forget my joy at finally being in a Western movie,” the actor-filmmaker wrote in a caption to his post. One clip of him in the movie shows Costner spinning two pistols in his hands before pocketing them in his holsters.
Another image shows him standing with his costar Danny Glover. Costner also shared the movie’s poster, which shows him, Glover, now 77, as well as Kevin Kline and Scott Glenn, who also led the film’s cast. “It had been my life’s dream since being glued to my seat watching How the West Was Won when I was seven years old,” Costner wrote in the caption to his post.
Costner has since grown closely associated with the Western genre for his work in movies like Dances with Wolves (1990), Open Range (2003) and most recently, his starring role in the television series Yellowstone. He is returning to the genre as an actor, writer and director with his upcoming Horizon: An American Saga, a movie he is releasing in two parts in the coming months.
“I have that same joy right now, working on Horizon. The story we’re telling has been on my heart for nearly two decades and it’ll be yours in just a couple of months,” Costner wrote of his upcoming movies on Instagram Tuesday. “I hope you’ll love it like I do.”
The two-time Academy Award winner unveiled the first trailer for Horizon in February, teasing a wide-spanning story that “explores the lure of the Old West and how it was won — and lost — through the blood, sweat and tears of many,” per an official synopsis for the film. The films take place during the American Civil War between 1861 and 1865 and features an ensemble cast that includes Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Jena Malone, Abbey Lee, Michael Rooker, Danny Huston, Luke Wilson and Isabelle Fuhrman, among others.
Costner has been working on Horizon for decades, as he told Deadline in June 2023. At that time, he even shared that he partially funded the project himself by taking out a mortgage on his 10-acre home in Santa Barbara, California. Costner has also indicated that he intends to make more than two Horizon movies. He wrote on Instagram last Wednesday that he was still scouting locations to shoot the next film in the series.
Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 1 is in theaters June 28, followed by Chapter 2 on Aug. 16.
