While Kevin Costner’s John Dutton, the patriarch Dutton of the family, has been the primary focus of Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone, it’s the story of his daughter and ranch hand that resides at its heart. Played by Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser, Beth Dutton, daughter of John Dutton, and Rip Wheeler, John’s ranchhand, have become the most fascinating aspect of the show, which is nearing its end.

And with the married couple’s story set to become the most crucial aspect moving forward, things might’ve been astronomically different for the two fan favorites if it wasn’t for one steamy scene.

The Scene That Made Taylor Sheridan Put the Spotlight on Kelly Reilly’s and Cole Hauser

In the very first episode, Kelly Reilly’s Beth and Cole Hauser’s Rip engaged in a steamy s-x scene that pushed Taylor Sheridan to make some prominent changes to the show. Initially, Beth and Rip weren’t drawn out to be the main focus, but the s-x sequence, in which she slaps Hauser, pushed Sheridan to take the characters in a new direction.

As the story goes, Beth and Rip’s story became as integral to Yellowstone as Kevin Costner’s John, all thanks to the impressive s-x sequence that left everyone on set dumbfounded. Cole Hauser told Vanity Fair:

“Initially there was a scene where we were having s-x in her bedroom on the dresser, and she slaps me, and the way I reacted. I remember walking out of that scene and everybody was just kind of glued to the monitors, and I saw John and Taylor and the producers and the D.P. and so on. And I looked at them and they just all looked up, like, a ‘Wow, that was amazing’ kind of feeling.”

From then on, Beth and Rip started garnering more spotlight, which further pushed them to take “risks together. And I think that’s how it’s become what it has.”

The Impeccable Chemistry Was All Natural Between the Two

Reflecting on his time together with Kelly Reilly, Cole Hauser explained their impeccable chemistry onscreen that made for some great TV was completely natural. Hauser further stressed that they’ve got a pretty unselfish bond and enjoy working together. He said:

“We were just very free together. You know, it’s rare that you find an actress, and she’s commented about it too in interviews, where I’m free to do as I please, and she follows my lead sometimes, and sometimes it’s vice versa and I’ll follow hers. It’s a very unselfish relationship where we both just love working together.”

While Kevin Costner’s exit as the head of the table’s exit has had fans upset, Beth and Rin’s story will still have fans tuned in for the second half of season 5how their story concludes.

Yellowstone is available to stream on Peacock.
