Renowned as one of the most iconic composers in cinematic history, John Williams has shared his reluctance towards retirement in a recent interview. With a career spanning over decades, Williams has left an indelible mark on the world of music and cinema. He has composed memorable scores for multiple movies and franchises ranging from Star Wars, Jaws, Indiana Jones, and Harry Potter.

While the 2023 film Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny was expected to be his last film, the composer seemed to be planning to outlast iconic actors like Clint Eastwood, as he shared that he is not considering retirement at the age of 91.

John Williams Talks About His Retirement Plans

In a recent interview with The Times, the award-winning composer John Williams expressed his desire to keep the door open for potential future projects. Talking about any previous statement considering his retirement, he said,

“I don’t care much for grand pronunciamentos, statements that are firm and finished and surrounded by closed doors. If I made one without putting it in context, then I withdraw it.”

Williams further stated that he does not want to deny any possibilities and would compose again if a film captures his interest and has a manageable schedule. “I wouldn’t want to rule anything out,” he said before adding, “I like to keep an open mind.” His commitment to composing at the age of 91 has brought him alongside Hollywood stars like Clint Eastwood, who has also continued working in his 90s.

Clint Eastwood on Actively Working in His 90s

Actor and Oscar-winning filmmaker Clint Eastwood has directed some of the great movies in Hollywood. As the filmmaker continues to work in his 90s, fans have wondered about his retirement plans. And the Cry Macho star reflected on the same during an interview with The Los Angeles Times,

“What the hell am I still working for in my 90s? Are people going to start throwing tomatoes at you? I’ve gotten to the point where I wondered if that was enough, but not to the point where I decided it was. If you roll out a few turkeys, they’ll tell you soon enough.”

He also explained that initially directing seemed more appealing for the latter half of his career, however, with time it has become something he likes. “I just like it,” he said, noting he would continue working as long as he finds a captivating story to work on.

While Eastwood has not specified his retirement plans, Discussing Film claimed in a report that his upcoming film Juror No. 2 would be his last movie, and the Gran Torino director is planning his retirement after finishing the movie.
