Kevin Costner’s upcoming film Horizon: An American Saga is the embodiment of his lifelong ambition, a project he has nurtured for more than three decades. The actor’s tireless dedication to realizing his vision for this Western saga is evident, especially in his decision to step away from the popular show Yellowstone, which hindered the film’s production.

As he gears up to premiere the first movie in the series at the 77th Cannes Film Festival alongside Francis Ford Coppola’s self-financed passion project Megalopolis, Costner revealed his own substantial investment in the film series, as he shared that despite financial constraints, he is adamant to complete the Western saga.

Starring an ensemble cast including Sam Worthington, Sienna Miller, and Jena Malone, alongside Kevin Costner, Horizon: An American Saga delves into the expansion of the American West during the Civil War era. In a recent interview with Deadline, the Yellowstone star star dished about the project’s finances.

“I’m on schedule right now at $98 million,” he said before adding, “And when I do the fourth film, it will push me over $100 million.” Previous reports have stated that the first two films, which Costner is also producing, both cost $100 million.

The first two movies in the film series are reportedly completed, however, the Oscar-winner is still looking forward to making some cuts in the second part. During his interview, he also revealed the challenges he encountered in securing funds for the third film in the series.

“I wanted to start April 25th, but I’ve got to find the money,” he said, explaining that filming for the third segment had to be rescheduled to May 6th and late to May 13th due to the lack of funds. However, he is still adamant about completing the four-part Western saga.

“I’ve moved myself to May 13th, and I’m going to start my movie,” he said before adding, “I don’t give a sh*t now. I’m just going to start it.” The filming for the third and fourth parts of the Horizon Saga is reportedly set to commence in June.

Kevin Costner Reportedly Invested Millions in Horizon: An American Saga

Francis Ford Coppola stunned everyone as reports revealed that the filmmaker self-financed his passion project, Megalopolis, investing $120 million in the upcoming epic sci-fi, which has been described as potentially risky given the scale of the undertaking.

However, similar to Coppola, Kevin Costner, has also made significant personal investments in his new film series, Horizon: An American Saga. The Bodyguard star reportedly spent $24 million of his own funds on the first two movies and even mortgaged 10 acres of his $50 million oceanfront Santa Barbara property, to ensure funds for his passion project.

Costner candidly admitted to the financial strain, saying, “For me, it’ll be two or three years without a salary from Horizon.” However, he is not bothered by any possibility as he expressed his unwavering commitment to completing the Horizon saga, regardless of any obstacles.
