House of the Dragon fans, we have some unfortunate news to report. It appears Season 3 of the HBO fantasy drama series will take a bit longer to arrive, as some important players in the cast haven’t received a script of any kind.
While we’re pretty sure they won’t say no once it arrives, it’s still a bit odd that a show that successful for HBO is taking so long to progress. The Game of Thrones prequel was created by Ryan Condal alongside the original author of the book series, George R. R. Martin. While it is believed that House of the Dragon will end with its fourth season, based on the length of time between seasons, it could still take several years for the next two seasons to play out.
According to Variety, co-stars Matt Smith, Fabian Frankel and Tom Glynn-Carney, showed up at New York Comic Con 2024, where they participated in a panel for the series. Speaking during the panel, Smith wasn’t very optimistic about a return to the show in the short term:
“I’ve not heard hide nor hair. I don’t know about you guys. I’ve not heard a thing.”
While others on the panel seemed to be in the mindset that there is little doubt that they will be returning to the series in time, it is clear that as of now, there is no sign of that getting underway anytime soon.
House of the Dragon Needs to Appeal to the Fans of the Show and Not the Fans of the Books
Both Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon have had huge highs and terrible lows when it comes to audience reactions. While there have been some complaints from those unfamiliar with the source material, there has been much more discourse among long-term fans of Martin’s books. While it always seems a struggle for viewers to grasp the fact that the term “adaptation” doesn’t mean a verbatim translation from page to screen, it would probably be much more beneficial for House of the Dragon to focus its attention on pleasing those who have invested in the series so far, more than those who are expecting everything to play out as per Martin’s texts.
While Season 1 restored a lot of faith in the Game of Thrones franchise, Season 2 suffered a little for partially teasing what was to come in the future – even if it did include one of the biggest dragon fights of the entire franchise. The dynamics in Season 3 will surely change, as there is a brutal and bloody battle to be played out that cannot be avoided or put off any longer, especially with the end apparently coming sooner rather than later. As the Variety piece reports, execs at HBO seem to be happy with Ryan Condal’s decision to end the show with Season 4. Per HBO’s comment on the matter:
“Commonly, when adapting a book for the screen, with its own format and limitations, the showrunner ultimately is required to make difficult choices about the characters and stories the audience will follow. We believe that Ryan Condal and his team have done an extraordinary job and the millions of fans the series has amassed over the first two seasons will continue to enjoy it.”
