CBS canceled Blue Bloods ahead of its fourteenth season, but an update on how Tom Selleck’s Frank Reagan’s story ends indicates that the story may not be over after the series finale. During an interview with TV Insider following the release of Blue Bloods season 14, episode 10, showrunner Kevin Wade teased how Frank Reagan’s story ends in the CBS series. When asked if Frank is seriously considering leaving his job as the New York City Police Commissioner, Wade said:
“I’m pretty sure that Frank would stay in his job until the series ended. We didn’t really pursue that avenue because the show is built on him being the police commissioner of New York City. So to take a detour during the last mile, if this is the last mile, I don’t know what he would be doing down at the hardware store or having coffee with old buddies during the day. I always have to look at stuff that generates stories. Police Commissioner of New York generates stories. He’s the CEO of 35,000 cops.”

It’s hard to imagine anyone replacing Frank as the Police Commissioner in Blue Bloods, and it appears as if fans won’t have to. According to Wade, the procedural drama will end with Frank still in the job that he has had since the show premiered in 2010. While the showrunner’s comments give viewers insight into how the CBS series will end, the quote also proves why there’s still hope for Blue Bloods season 15.
