Below Deck Mediterranean season 9’s chef Johnathan Shillingford has struggled throughout the first charters of the season, but after his most recent performance, he may not wind up the first person fired from Mustique. Chef Johnathan opened up about the fact that he was excited and ready to take on the challenge of cooking aboard Mustique early on in the season, but his performance thus far has been so lackluster that some have wondered if he’s a production plant in the cast meant to cause drama. While Johnathan has struggled, he’s aware that his dishes haven’t been up to par.

Throughout the run of Below Deck Mediterranean, many charter chefs have struggled to get their bearings underneath them during the first charters of the season. Despite having the confidence in himself needed to be a decent superyacht crew member, Chef Jono has been able to keep the charter entertained to the best of his ability, as well. Though his cooking hasn’t been what the charter guests are looking for, he’s been able to do a decent job at creating dishes that are, at the very least, edible. Chef Jono has been doing poorly, but his recent performance may turn things around.

Chef Jono Had A Few Tough Charters

The first few charters of Below Deck Mediterranean season 9 have been a serious struggle for Chef Johnathan, who has been open about his journey to finding himself a superyacht chef. Though the path wasn’t linear for Jono, his behavior as someone who claims that he enjoys his job working in galleys has been odd. Jono has been failing to take direction, consistently ignoring the criticisms from charter guests and Captain Sandy Yawn alike. While Jono has been trying his hardest, he’s also been making it clear that he’s not interested in working outside of his typical boundaries aboard Mustique.

Captain Sandy Was Ready To Call In Backup

After the meals served in the first charters of the season were poorly received, Captain Sandy knew that she couldn’t wait around for Jono to improve. Instead, she decided to be proactive and call in a backup chef, just in case she needed to fire Johnathan on short notice. She mentioned that she hoped she wouldn’t have to fire Jono and bring in the backup, but if she did, she was happy to have a contingency plan in place. Unfortunately, Jono’s skills didn’t seem to be up to par enough for Captain Sandy to have faith in his culinary expertise.

Chef Jono Has Put In Some Extra Effort

During the most recent episode of Below Deck Mediterranean season 9, Chef Jono knew that he was on the chopping block if he didn’t get his act together. Deciding to step up his game, he did hit a roadblock when the primary guest didn’t enjoy his steak during the first night of the charter, but he ultimately redeemed himself with the meals that followed. Getting rave reviews from the guests, Captain Sandy explained that she was happy to see Johnathan improving. Though she has her contingency in place, Captain Sandy may not have to call in Below Deck Mediterranean backup.
