Captain Sandy Yawn and former chief stew Hannah Ferrier‘s friendship ended on a sour note after Ferrier was fired in Below Deck Mediterranean Season 5. But Captain Sandy says they have since reconnected and made peace with each other.
“I saw Hannah the other night and we had a great conversation,” Yawn said during a recent interview with Australian radio hosts Ricki-Lee and Tim Joel. “A lot of people think [I don’t like her]. But I don’t not like anyone. Honestly. I like Hannah. I actually care about Hannah. She knows that. I hope she’s listening because I do care about Hannah.”
Yawn explained that she recently visited Ferrier at her home in Australia, where she met her daughter. “We had a great conversation,” she said, though she didn’t share any details about how they managed to reconnect.
The former colleagues and Below Deck Med co-stars have had some ups and downs in their friendship. But it all came to a head in 2020 when bosun Malia White reported Ferrier for having Valium and CBD vape pen in her cabin, prompting Yawn to fire her once and for all.
The shocking decision caused an uproar among Below Deck fans, who even threatened to boycott the rest of the season. But Yawn defended her decision at the time.
“When the trust level is broken for me as a captain, I’m not taking anybody to sea,” she exclusively told Us Weekly at the time. “People [tried] to take my license over the years, really, because of things that happen [with the] crew.”
Ferrier told DECIDER that she was taking Valium to help with her anxiety at the time.
“I’ve just been really disappointed because I feel I’m being painted as some sort of drug addict or what have you. Which is just so sad, because there are so many people in the world that suffer from mental illness,” she said. “And it’s 2020. We shouldn’t be making people feel like a lesser for taking medication for mental illness. Or making them feel like they can’t do a job, or they can’t do what normal people can do.”
Ferrier has since maintained that she doesn’t regret her time on the show, despite the circumstances of her exit.
“It’s funny so many people ask me if I regret doing the show because of the way it ended in this season. I don’t think I could ever regret doing something that changed my life in the way this show did. And we had some GREAT fun filming,” she said in a post on social media.
